Friedrich Petzel Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of a new work by Corinne Wasmuht. The show will feature a single painting by the artist.

Corinne Wasmuht's paintings act as dreamlike sequences of fantastical landscapes and interiors layered upon each other, allowing the viewer to enter numerous dimensions at once. Although at first glance her colorful oil paintings seem abstract, they are actually detailed and worked fragments of fantasies that constantly slide into one another. Color plays an important role in the artist's work as well. "For me the color is the hereafter," Wasmuht says. "That is, life is the here and now in the hereafter, and for me personally color is life."

The exhibition consists of one large oil painting on wood. Called a "spatial landscape painting," multi-colored lines run along the top and bottom of the work, resulting in a wide, central perspective. Alluding to twilight but glowing like daylight, the painting straddles the line between day and night, ultimately residing somewhere in between. The landscape aspect of the work can be seen in the lines that result in the formation of a lake, while the nature of the work is furthered by the juxtaposition of an artificial sky above with a simultaneous foundation for a setting sun below. A skyline of houses, rendered in black, is covered in bright beams, which increase the depth of the work. Various figures, adapted by the artist from pictures of people on the street and in demonstrations, traverse the surface of the work. Though somewhat recognizable as such, they remain ethereal, only recognizable as contours and shadows moving within the cosmos.

Wasmuht has been exhibited in both Europe and the United States. Recently, she had a solo exhibition at the Kunstverein in Hamburg, and was included in group exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Bremen, the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, and the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus.

Corinne Wasmuht was born in 1964 in Dortmund, Germany. She received her degree from Kunstakademie Dusseldorf. The artist currently lives and works in Berlin.

This will be Corinne Wasmuht's first solo exhibition with Friedrich Petzel Gallery.
