Lee Friedlander
At work
Stems, Tetons, New Work

Ever since the 60s Lee Friedlander has been recognized as one of the most important American photographers. Friedlander is an indefatigable and intense chronicler, not only of the world around him, but also of his own, immediate surroundings. In sophisticated black and white photography he playfully analyzes familiar visual experiences.

The central focus of this exhibition is the series of photographs entitled "At Work", comprising six different series made between 1979 and 1995, in which Friedlander pictured the most divergent work processes. This series of over 100 photographs has been supplemented with a selection from Friedlander's still lifes of flowers, "Stems", which he made when confined to the house due to knee problems. In addition, several of his most recent photographs of American cities are presented under the working title "New Work". In these, he ingeniously merges the categories of cityscape, landscape and still life. Finally, several photographs from the "Tetons" series exemplify Friedlander's majestic portrayals of the American landscape.

As its title implies, the "At Work" series does not focus on the actual work itself, but on the people who do the work. Friedlander is much more interested in creating a universal picture of the worker in general, in showing these workers as links in the chain of a much greater industrial and economic process. He observed these working people close at hand. Completely undisturbed, the workers in the photographs carry out the manoeuvres they perform day in and day out at the places where they spend a substantial portion of their lives. Friedlander approached them so unobtrusevily, that he holds up a truthful mirror to us.

The exhibition was realized in collaboration with Die Photographische Sammlung / SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne, the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco and Galerie Thomas Zander, Cologne.
