Nan Goldin
Heartbeat

Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Nan Goldin "Heartbeat", the exhibition at his gallery at 522 West 22nd Street.

The exhibition will include 45 new color photographs made in Europe over the last two years and a new multimedia installation, "Heartbeat", consisting of 245 projected slides and a soundtrack by Björk based on a Greek Orthodox mass. This is the first time the work will be on view in the United States.

A central theme in Nan Goldin's new work is couples' love-making. Catherine Lampert has written of this work, "as a silent participant in the marvelous new sequences of couples making love, her photographs record the lustrous skin and the arching, nearly Baroque rhythms of their bodies. Goldin sees the mood change as the subjects are infused with 'coupling and cocooning - that bubble when you first fall in love'." The exhibition will also include landscapes, portraits, and still-lifes.

The multimedia installation, "Heartbeat", was originally commissioned by the Centre Pompidou for Goldin's recent retrospective exhibition, "Still on Earth", which has traveled to museums in Paris, London, Madrid, Porto, Turin and Warsaw in the last year and a half.

This is the artist's fifth exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery since 1992. Goldin's work was the subject of a major touring retrospective exhibition organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1996. Her work was most recently seen in New York in the exhibitions Moving Pictures at the Guggenheim Museum, Visions from America at the Whitney Museum, and Modern Photographs at the Metropolitan Museum.
