Richard Pettibone: Frank Stella Darabjevd II, 1967 Oil on canvas, 1969, 7 x 9 ins Phew! What a scorcher... Keith Coventry, Sam Francis, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Pettibone, Bridget Riley, Andy Warhol Archeus' summer exhibition offers refuge for those unable to brave the wind-chill of the typical English August. An unusually hot appropriation painting by Richard Pettibone, of Frank Stella's 1967 shaped canvas "Darabjevd II" is one of the highlights of the show - a great 60s example of Pettibone's caustic miniature criticisms of modern art in America never previously seen in this country - and can be compared with a "Warhol Blue Marilyn" also by Pettibone, all 2" of it. Ice cream coolness is provided by Keith Coventry, whose "Trooping the Colour" from the famous White Abstracts series provides a rare opportunity to examine a key work from this under-appreciated but influential British figure. Whilst we can't offer any windbreaks, visitors can shelter in front of a truly beautiful Bridget Riley stripe painting, from the Visual Grey Series of the early 1980s. Riley's work has been undergoing not so much of a reappraisal as a complete introduction to a new generation of overseas collectors with her recent large scale exhibitions. This particular work has not been seen in London since it was exhibited at Rowan Gallery in 1981, and is sure to generate excitement amongst followers of her work. A bold, colourful Sam Francis enamel work provides an element of splashing around, and an Ellsworth Kelly "Dark Red-Violet Panel" casts some soothing shade. Phew, indeed!
