Philippine Hoegen
Redemption Street 29 - The Brazil Pieces

Percy Miller gallery is very pleased to be showing the first U.K. solo exhibition of work by the Dutch artist, Philippine Hoegen. She will be showing two new photographic pieces which continue her exploration into peoples' private experiences within their own homes.

Redemption Street 29 is a series of 5 photographs made in an apartment in Porto-Alegre, Brazil. On the right hand wall of the gallery a large photograph shows a woman sitting on a sofa surrounded by domestic objects. On the opposite wall there is another photograph showing us what the woman is seeing. The lighting is neutral and cool. The three further photographs are again taken from the women's viewpoint, but the light is now yellow and thick and a lamp has been switched on. Nothing has moved, a glass on a table is still half full, a fallen chair still lies flat on its back. She stares at her knees which are just visible under the hemline of her skirt. In this piece Hoegen has uses a subtle narrative structure to present us with an intense private drama which is neither fully described nor fully explained.

Clean, a slide installation, was made in Porto, Portugal. A woman, dressed as a cleaning lady, opens a cupboard door and energetically empties it of its content. She steps inside and closes the door. We are left looking at the disorganised pile on the floor and the blank face of the closed door. In this work Hoegen's use of low-tech equipment, combined with a simple installation, only heightens the intensity of this tragicomic tale.

Hoegen recently exhibited in Unprincipled Passions at the John Hansard Gallery, Southampton and The People's Art at Witte de With, Rotterdam. Previously she was in In a Lonely Place, National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, Bradford and has had two solo exhibitions at Team, New York. She exhibited in View from Within at Hales Gallery, London.

In 2001 Artimo, Amsterdam published her book "The Crack in the Wall".
