Rezi Van Lankveld Van Lankveld builds up a fluid surface of oil paint from which figures emerge through the painting process. Her paintings play with the interior tradition of Dutch space against a sombre lit image. In smaller works such as "Poison Girl" and "Waiting" it is at first difficult to make out the seated or reclining figures through the marbled swirls of oil. The emotionally charged figures become clearer in the larger scale paintings which evoke both a dark edge of menace and a sense of melancholy. The works deal with paintings problematic interplay between the plastic and the pictured, creating a visual slippage between the action and the acted. Rezi van Lankveld graduated from Jan van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht in 1999. Recent exhibitions include: Diana Stigter gallery, Amsterdam (2003); 'Dirty Pictures', The Approach, London (2003); 'Free space', Hasselt, Belgium (2002); Loerakker gallery, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2002).
