Roland Fischer
Façades, Cathedrals and South Central

From 23 April to 8 June 2002, the Sollertis Gallery will be showing the recent works of the German photographer Roland Fischer (*1958), encompassing his three major cycles on the theme of architecture: Façades, Cathedrals and, for the very first time, South Central.

For this latter series of photos taken in the eponymous neighbourhood of Los Angeles in 1994, the photographer embarked on the development of what Santiago B. Olmo would later call a "Portrait of Architecture". In one of those parts of the world where, despite all the poverty and violence, people are determined to save face and retain their dignity, here by way of the individual home.

The exhibition also offers us a chance to present a selection of Fischer's very latest Façades. Since photographing buildings in Chinese business districts in 1998, the artist has been ceaselessly exploring the various aspects of this architectural category, in the United States, France, and, most recently, southeast Asia and Japan. The photographic image is here transformed into a radically abstract surface, through a process of systematic fragmentation.

Last of all, Roland Fischer comes up with a development of the Cathedrals cycle that was started in 1996. The show will include two new images, of Caodaism major temple in Vietnam, and of San Miniato in Florence.

The artist proposes an exploration of clearly defined architectural styles, and thus tends towards an in-depth understanding of the architectural fact. Roland Fischer's work opens the photographic language up to new perspectives by way of on-going and evolutive experimentation with the technological wherewithal, prompted by a unifying conceptual attitude.

A retrospective of Roland Fischer's work will be shown in 2003 at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.
