 Installation view Xavier Veilhan People as volume Andréhn-Schiptjenko has the pleasure to announce "People as Volume", Xavier Veilhan's fourth solo exhibition at the gallery. Veilhan, born 1963 and living and working in Paris, is arguably one of France's most internationally renowned artists and has been receiving a lot of attention for his recent public projects "Le Monstre" in Tours and "Le Lion" in Bordeaux. His solo exhibition "Vanishing Point" and his installation project "Le Grand Mobile" recently closed at the Centre Pompidou, Paris and he is currently featured in "Contrepoint" at Le Louvre, Paris. "People as Volume" will be the first presentation of a new series of works where Veilhan has used a three-dimensional scanning technology to represent the form and volume of human beings. The pieces are intentionally called "statues", a term that has fallen out of use within contemporary art production insofar as the monumentalisation of human beings in the form of statues has become almost obsolete. The statues are renderings of people in the artist's proximity - friends, family and colleagues - and done with a varying degree of finish in materials such as ebony, silver, polyurethane and resin. The sizes vary between 4 - 195 cm and each statue is presented on its specific podium. At a time when many artists work to shift the spatio-temporal context of art Veilhan gives priority to the exhibition as a well-calibrated form for the socialisation of art. Well aware of the ambiguity of the exhibition as form he has integrated its discourse into his artistic practice. Two monographs on Veilhan's work have recently been published, "Xavier Veilhan" by David Perreau, editions Hazan, and "Xavier Veilhan Espace 315", Editions du Centre Pompidou, and are available through the gallery. In 2005 Veilhan will do solo exhibitions at MASS MOCA, Massachusetts and at Centro de Arte Caja de Burgos, Spain. A retrospective exhibition Musée d'art contemporain de Strasbourg opens in October 2005.
