Der israelische Künstler Yariv Spivak zeigt in seiner ersten Ausstellung ausserhalb Israels eine Videoinstallation mit mehreren Projektionen.
Der Künstler streift mit seiner Kamera durch das nächtliche Tel-Aviv und beobachtet in langsamen, ruhigen Bildern Menschen in rätselhaften und einsamen Situationen. In den schmutzigen Strassen der multikulturellen, lebendigen und mediterranen Stadt Tel-Aviv, auch genannt die "weisse Stadt", entdeckt Yariv Spivak im Schutz der Dunkelheit kleine Szenen persönlichen oder materiellen Elends oder nächtlicher Begegnungen, die in ihrer Absurdität und poetischer Melancholie auch durchaus komisch wirken. Die Nacht hat ihre eigene Kulisse und ihren ganz eigenen Zauber. Die Protagonisten in Yariv Spivaks Videoarbeiten erscheinen als Schauspieler, versunken in ihrem Tun, in einem Setting menschlicher Abgründe. Die Figuren wähnen sich ausserhalb irgendeines Fokusses, fühlen sich in der Dunkelheit geborgen, unbeobachtet und nicht von Interesse, während die beobachtende Kamera mit weit geöffneter Linse unbewegt bleibt. Der Betrachter ist, wie auch der Künstler, ein Voyeur aus sicherer Distanz, dabei kommt weder Schadenfreude noch Mitleid auf, sondern Mitgefühl und Empathie. Etwas sehr Menschliches, Tiefes und Verbindendes wird hier angesprochen. Yariv Spivak zeigt die realen Szenen als geloopte Sequenzen, die lediglich mit wenigen Schnitten bearbeitet sind.
Yariv Spivak studierte an der Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem und lebt und arbeitet in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Wrong Path - Artist statement
"My video works are all documentary. Nothing is fake. And yet there is a certain quality of fiction in them. Most of the characters depicted are drowned in their world and turn into mechanisms that run forever in a loop. I work mainly in the night time and create small pockets of reality, often very mundane, into which the surreal is subtly inserted. For example, a homeless woman standing in the street, half conscious, almost falling but stable, on the limit between a human figure and an abstract pile of rags.
I walk on a line parallel to the secret life of danger, hunger and sorrow. With my camera, wide open iris and the slowest shutter speed my camera can work with, I capture hardcore scenes as a bionic voyeur touring through the Other's natural habitat from a far safe spot. The camera is stable and quiet in contrary to the wild quality of the city's dark side, poverty, drugs and corruption. The chain of street shots I create is critical, marking and highlighting the dark side of the bright white city. The neglected parts of the city are in the front now and it is more of a poetic existential attitude than a political demonstrative action leaning on the video medium. However, in these silent shots the magic of the dirty street and the characters become the actors of the cruel play controlled by the municipality or by peoples' lack of interest, like the spectacular moment of a bored street officer who is playing volleyball with her friends and as she does so she interferes with the street workers duties. The night is keyword in the works, the darkness as an aesthetic code. It's almost as if the characters are grainy in their real life and therefor they are being represented in the works in a very busy, dusty, heavily pixelated and dirty frame. Just like when in the film "Deconstructing Harry" by Woody Allen he feels out of focus and his character is indeed out of focus using a special effect."
Yariv Spivak is a video and installation artist that lives and works in Tel Aviv. ‘Wrong Path' is his second solo exhibition.

Diese Zürcher KunstaktivistInnen haben das Haus und das Ladenlokal des ehemaligen jüdischen Textilgeschäfts Perla-Mode/Rubinfeld an der Langstrasse 84 bis auf weiteres zur kulturellen Zwischennutzung gemietet.
Im grossen Ausstellungsraum zeigen die einzelnen BetreiberInnen abwechselnd und unabhängig voneinander Ausstellungen und Projekte, daneben wird es in diesem Raum auch gemeinsam organisierte Veranstaltungen geben.
Das Haus ist ausserdem Basistation der Perla-Mode-Aktiven, die im Haus ihre eigenen Projekt- und Verkaufsräume oder Büros betreiben.
